Mt Ainslie delivers a true Long Distance test at Australian Schools Championships

The Australian Schools Orienteering Championships continued today with the Long Distance Event at Remembrance Park on the slopes of Mt Ainslie, swapping yesterday’s fast and intricate sprint racing for a very different challenge.

The Mt Ainslie terrain lived up to its reputation, with steep slopes, open eucalypt forest, rocky ground and an extensive network of tracks forcing competitors to constantly weigh up whether to climb directly, contour across the hillside or use the tracks to gain speed. As the morning wore on, the temperature climbed and the dry Canberra bush took on a distinctly summery feel.

After the Sprint and Long Distance events, the ACT appears to be leading the ASOC team competition. The ACT has built its lead through strong performances across all four classes, while Tasmania’s consistency – particularly in the Senior Girls and Junior Boys – has kept the contest tight. NSW and Queensland remains within striking distance, meaning tomorrow’s Relay Championships at Pine Island Reserve will play a crucial role in deciding the final team standings.

The Southern Cross Junior Challenge is also finely balanced heading into tomorrow’s relays. New Zealand’s Karahiwi has a slight advantage over Harua, while the ACT remains firmly in contention. Tasmania has edged ahead of NSW, leaving the final Relay Championships at Pine Island Reserve with plenty still to decide.
