Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge and celebrate the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet and compete, the Ngunnawal, Ngambri and Ngarigo peoples. We recognise their ongoing connection to and care of this Country and pay respect to the Elders past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The icon of this carnival, the bogong moth (Agrotis infusa), is a native endangered nocturnal migratory moth. They migrate south to the Australian Alps for summer, travelling up to 1000km—perhaps as far as you will travel for this carnival! Historically, Aboriginal peoples from Countries in and around the Alps came together during summer to feast on the moths and conduct intertribal business.
